Position: Pipeline Integrity Technician I

Location: Dover, DE

Responsible for exhibiting Chesapeake Utilities Corporation's Mission, Vision and Values, regarding external customers, agencies, vendors, internal departments and co-workers.  This position will maintain compliance with 49CFR Part 192 regulations, conduct surveys, operate, and maintain Eastern Shore's cathodic protection systems. This role will support the implementation and management Eastern Shore's pipeline integrity program, including lead role in ECDA and other required integrity inspections as well as assist with pipeline patrolling, leakage surveys, and other required inspections.

This position will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Activities associated with ESNG cathodic protection systems operation and maintenance:
    • Conduct routine monthly and annual pipe-to-soil surveys on ESNG pipeline.
    • Conduct routine surveys, operate and maintain ESNG cathodic protection rectifiers, CP test points, bonds, casings, and insulators.
    • Supervise and coordinate on-going CP system repair efforts.
    • Supervise construction of new and upgrade of existing cathodic protection systems.
    • Maintain records for compliance with applicable codes.
    • Submit annual status report to Pipeline Integrity and Engineering Manager with conclusions as to the operational status of ESNG's cathodic protection systems and recommendations for system repairs and improvements.
  • Activities associated with ESNG Pipeline Integrity Management Program:
    • Assist Pipeline Integrity Manager to maintain compliance and develop new and update existing processes and procedures to continually update and improve ESNG pipeline integrity management program.
    • Bid and evaluate required services and materials for ECDA/ICDA pipeline integrity surveys.
    • Manage and supervise contractors during ECDA/ICDA pipeline integrity surveys.
    • Perform ECDA and other surveys as part of the implementation of pipeline integrity program.
    • Supervise and coordinate direct assessment activities.
    • Ensure compliance with all DOT codes and regulations including Part 192, Subpart I.
  • Assist with CPK Operator Qualification evaluations with respect to corrosion control.
  • Activities associated with ESNG engineering and construction:
    • Design of pipeline corrosion control systems for existing and new pipelines and appurtenances to include: cathodic protection, coating systems, induced AC and stray DC interference, atmospheric corrosion control.
    • Perform construction inspection duties under direction of engineering staff.
    • Assist with permit management and required submittals.
    • Represent the Company before Federal, State, and local agencies
  • Represent ESNG to the public. Liaison with regulatory authorities and other stakeholders in matters pertaining to regulatory compliance.
  • Performing duties of a Pipeline Integrity Technician when required.
  • Assist in training for Operator Qualification Program. Evaluate and qualify company personnel in accordance with company OQ Program within areas of expertise.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requires......a total commitment to Chesapeake Utilities Corporation's Mission, Vision and Values and:

  • Bachelors Degree preferred, or equivalent knowledge and relevant experience in corrosion control. One to three (1-3) years pipeline corrosion experience with NACE CP Tester certification or equivalent training preferred.
  • Equipment and Tools - Personal computer, rectifier operation and maintenance, line locating equipment, leak detection and pinpointing equipment, plan reading, hand tools, photocopy machine. Understanding of all applicable federal, state, and local regulations such as 49CFR Part 192, Subpart O (pipeline integrity rule), etc.
  • Methods and Processes- Cathodic protection survey methods (pipe-to-soil, close-interval, rectifiers, bond currents, anodes, voltage gradient (DCVG and AC Attenuation) surveys, electrical surveys, line location methods, leak detection and pinpointing methods, word processor, data base, spread sheet knowledge.

Working Conditions:

  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS: Personal computer, corrosion and other survey equipment, hand tools, company vehicle, misc. office equipment.
  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR MATERIALS: Maintenance of various project related and office materials.
  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR DIRECTION AND INSTRUCTION OF OTHERS: Sometimes supervise department personnel. Direct contractor and company forces as required for completion of required construction, surveys and permits, easements, etc.
  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAFETY OF OTHERS: Observes safe working procedures in office and on job sites.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Excellent physical condition; requires extensive field work in all weather conditions, walking, digging.
  • MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a good reasoning skills and self-direction. Ability to effectively interact with company, contractors, and public is a must. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Mathematical ability, normal level visual acuity and normal hearing ability required.
  • HAZARDS: Working with flammable materials and construction sites.
  • SURROUNDINGS: Both in office and outside at job locations.
