The Senior Director, Drug Surveillance and Pipeline, under the direction of the Vice President, Clinical and Formulary Services (office in Schaumburg, IL/Irvine, CA/Minneapolis, MN) will manage Clinical Pharmacists and Business Analysts and serve as a dedicated pharmacovigilance leader responsible for drug surveillance, developing budget impact analyses, and managing drug safety initiatives. This director will lead enterprise-wide proactive identification and management of high impact pharmaceuticals to mitigate potential high costs/utilization. Leadership activities in support of this role include, but are not limited to Proposal Development & Review, Prospective Clinical Data Review & Assessment, Presentation Preparation and Delivery. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the OptumRx drug pipeline surveillance program to provide clinical intelligence and potential financial impact for both specialty and non-specialty pharmaceuticals across all lines of business

  • Lead the OptumRx First Movers process to identify high profile pipeline drugs and biosimilars to proactively identify formulary and utilization management strategies

  • Oversee the OptumRx clinical communications program to provide clients and internal stake holders timely and pertinent drug information in both written and oral form

  • Manage the OptumRx drug safety initiatives, including shortage and recalls, to meet CMA, NCQA and URAC requirements

  • Provide oversight and strategy for developing, maintaining, and improving processes related to the OptumRx drug pipeline and pharmacovigilance operations

  • Collaborate with key internal teams including Industry Relations, Clinical Analytics, and Formulary Operations to accurately model and forecast impact of pipeline drugs and develop effective formulary and utilization management strategies

  • Serve as liaison between the Clinical Services team and other cross-functional areas, including Industry Relations, Formulary Operations, Clinical Analytics, and Sales (Clinical Consultants; Account Management; Sales Team) to gain clear and up-to-date understanding of changing marketplace needs relative to drug surveillance strategies

  • Serve as drug pipeline subject matter expert at key industry meetings as well as in external publications as needed

  • Ensure all customer-specific commitments tied to provision of clinical communications, drug safety program, and / or pipeline reports meet or exceed defined goals

  • Spearhead training efforts to educate all key stakeholder areas regarding new drug surveillance activities and routine refinements to existing offerings

  • Oversee the management of the entire life cycle from strategic planning to tactical activities through hand off to the operations team

Critical Competencies:  

  • Ability to conceptualize, align and explain strategic vision based upon multiple complex parameters, including healthcare marketplace, market trends, competitor products, emerging technologies, business opportunities, Company goals, client and consultant requests, product value, product development capabilities and product development process

  • Understanding of different lines of business (e.g., commercial, Medicaid, exchanges) and respective marketplace needs - must think externally and strategically

  • Demonstrated experience working with all levels of cross-functional teams (executives, managers, analysts)

  • Ability to build out comprehensive and effective business plans that support future drug surveillance strategies

  • Quickly adapt to market changes

  • Strong manager and motivator of own team and cross-functional teams


Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree preferred

  • Must maintain at least one valid pharmacist license without restrictions

  • 5+ years of managed care pharmacy experience

  • 3+ years hands-on experience in drug information or pipeline surveillance

  • 3+ years of leadership experience

  • 3+ years regular interface with senior leadership levels on projections/initiatives

  • 3+ years of extensive involvement in managed healthcare clinical pharmacy strategy

  • Strong clinical and analytic background

  • Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to make judgments about the value of ideas, needs and resources, and to effectively communicate the advantages and disadvantages of each to other decision makers

  • In-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry from both clinical and business perspectives

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Creative, high-energy self-starter with broad background, creative drive, and innovative solutions to business needs

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint                                           

  • Pharmacy residency preferred
